Aluminum Panel Wall

Another approach to the aluminum wall panels

I just decorated an office space in which they wanted my famous aluminum wall, but I didn’t want to do it the normal way with gluing because the building management was so strict. So I came up with another method, weaving long strips of the aluminum together as I did the corrugated cardboard wall. The great thing about this alternative is that you can use different widths of aluminum for a more interesting effect. You get rectangles instead of just squares. The disadvantage is you use twice as much aluminum, so it’s more expensive.

How to do it:

Measure the height of the wall and cut aluminum strips that are that length. Line up aluminum strips vertically on the wall. Nail each strip at the top as shown in the photo, some at the top of the wall and some a bit below. For example, in the 2nd and 4th strip, you will put the nail below where the first horizontal strip will go. These alternating nail heights will allow you to later weave the horizontal strips of aluminum.

Measure the width of the wall and cut aluminum strips that are that length. Now weave the top horizontal strip across all the vertical strips and adhere to the wall with nails. Continue down the wall.

HINT: When lining up the strips both vertically and horizontally, don’t make them flush. Leave about a 1/8 inch space. That will allow a little give when you’re weaving.
