Floating Calla Lilies

Floating Calla Lilies

We all love floral centerpieces on the dining room table. But one problem is that they take up space, so there’s less room for plates and food. Or they can be so tall that you can’t see over them. That’s when I came up with the idea of floating the flowers above the table. They take up no room on the table, and they’re above people’s heads so they don’t block anybody’s sightlines. And that levitation thing is so cool in an Obi-Wan Kenobi sort of way.

What you’ll need:

Approx. 8 calla lilies
Fishing Line
3M Command Strips (Cable holders)

Note:

I used real calla lilies in the photo. Out of water, they lasted about 48 hours. You can also use silk flowers so you can keep them floating all year long.

How to do it:

1. Apply 3M Command Strips (the ones for holding cable wires) in a line above the dining room table. Use masking tape as a guide to make sure you’re lining them up straight.

2. Cut the calla lilies so that the stems are of identical lengths, about 12 inches.

3. Using a needle, poke a hole at the bottom of one of the calla lily petals.

4. Thread some fishing line through the hole so it comes out the middle of the flower.

5. Tie a knot in the fishing line so the calla lily doesn’t slip through.

6. Experiment with the length of the fishing line so bottom of the calla lily stem is just above a seated person’s head.

7. Tie a loop knot at the top of the fishing line to hook it onto the 3M Command Strip.

Do the same with all the calla lilies, making sure to keep them hanging at the same point. You may have to readjust various ones when you’re done to get them all at the same height.
